Community Development

We work with communities for their benefit and to protect the forest and wildlife for the benefit of all.

Communities next to protected areas are challenged to find sustainable livelihood opportunities that support, rather than hinder, wildlife conservation. For many years, local communities have depended on local natural resources from inside the protected areas as a source of income at a commercial level.

Our grass roots approach to community development helps protect nature and provide economic, environmental and social benefits. One of the most important steps to change is engagement, education and awareness. We continue to create long-term, robust projects in several key areas around both reserves which address the needs of communities and have
far-reaching impacts.

Local people are negatively and positively affected by living close to
protected areas. It is paramount that they benefit from being located close to the forest for the long term existence of the area.

We foster close relationships with our neighbours and strive to promote an understanding of the environment, focusing on how to conserve the natural resources through promoting the sustainable use of shared forest products.

Creating alternative income generating activities, has replaced illegal charcoal burning on the west side of Thuma, teaching new skills to people and enabling them to improve family nutrition and generate incomes for their families. Our community activities cultivate strong relationships with our local communities and encourages collaboration among us.
